Disco Floral Festival-Inspired Wedding at Planet Bluegrass in Lyons, CO

ABOUT THE WEDDING

Allison & Greg’s wedding was the music festival-inspired party of their dreams. As frequent concert-goers, live music was a must. They hired a folky string trio for their ceremony and cocktail hour. Then spiced up the reception with an energetic funk band. It was a home-grown, community affair. If you can think of a personal twist, you can bet they incorporated it into their day. Allison’s nieces and nephews each had a role to play in the ceremony processional from ring bearers to flower girls and bubble blowers. Their stunning florals were embellished with pheasant feathers collected by the couple on their hunting trips. The bride handmade dozens of mushroom-shaped disco balls that glittered on their tablescapes. Being a chef, the groom prepped the majority of their wedding food the day before. Allison’s three brothers walked her down the aisle. Fittingly, her fourth brother officiated as he was the one to introduce the couple in the first place.

My personal highlight from the day was their grand entrance. Allison & Greg, along with their wedding party, grooved on into the Wildflower Pavilion backed by a powerful anthem of electric guitar, keys, bass, and drums. They basked in the music, taking in the moment and starting a dance party at the front of the room. It’s a grand entrance that lives rent free in my mind.

ABOUT THE VENUE

Planet Bluegrass is one of my favorite wedding venues on the front range. It’s 25 minutes north of Boulder in the charming town of Lyons, Colorado. It doubles as a music festival venue, and if you’re local you may have seen a show there. This venue offers the perfect combination of indoor and outdoor spaces needed for a wedding in the mountains. On wedding days, it feels like the ultimate haven for marriers and their guests. And the cherry on top is that it’s pet friendly! I have yet to photograph a couple at this venue that didn’t bring at least two dogs.

THE CEREMONY SITE

The ceremony site is an open grassy zone that backs up to a jagged rock wall and the North Saint Vrain River, littered with cairns. Dressed up with florals or just as is, it’s the epitome of nature’s beauty that truly speaks for itself. Couples can exit from their ceremony and go straight into the yurt for a moment alone, a quick bite and marriage license signing.

COCKTAIL HOUR & RECEPTION

Guests can easily transition from the ceremony to the outdoor cocktail area. It is the perfect mingling space; a flagstone patio setup with a large bar and buffet. There’s plenty for guests to explore during cocktail hour, space for yard games, and stunning photo ops by the iconic overgrown silo. The Wildflower Pavilion is a rustic and open reception space with natural wood and concrete materials. It can accommodate up to 250 guests. The space is equipped with a stage and a state of the art speaker system, perfect for a live wedding band or an epic DJ.

FAQS

Where can guests stay? Guests can stay in any number of hotels and vacation rentals in Boulder, Colorado. There is also a “tiny home resort” directly across the street from Planet Bluegrass, called WeeCasa! You can also camp nearby at Meadow Park which offers tent camping or RV parking. For reservations call the Lyons Parks and Recreation Department.

What are the best transportation methods to get to Planet Bluegrass? For couples planning a wedding at Planet Bluegrass, consider organizing shuttles for your guests. If you’re attending a wedding here without organized transportation, I’d recommend pre-scheduling your rideshare ahead of time, rather than waiting until the end of the night to call one.

Can couples get ready on-site? Yes! There are two getting ready spaces: a cute cabin by the river (typically used by bridal parties) and a room behind the cocktail site (often used by groomsmen). Both offer great natural light for hair and makeup artists, and plenty of space for the wedding parties.

Dog friendly, you say? According to the venue’s website, dogs are more than welcome for the ceremony. They ask that after the ceremony you have a point person take them off the property. Photographer’s tip: hire a wedding pet attendant, like Plus The Pups! This is a key vendor that supports a smooth wedding day that includes your fur babies.
